Call for Papers: Special Issue on Value and Mechanism of TCM for COVID-19

Engineering is an internationally circulated peer-reviewed academic journal sponsored by the Chinese Academy of Engineering. The journal is published on a monthly basis in English. Online versions are available through:

The SARS-CoV-2 pandemic inflicted immense global damage upon health care systems, economies, and social fabric. In recent years, a compelling body of evidence has surfaced, accentuating the therapeutic potential of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) in mitigating COVID-19-related mortality and morbidity. To quantify the added value of TCM against COVID-19 and meticulously explore its underpinning mechanisms, a multifaceted exploration spanning diverse disciplines, such as virology, analytical and organic chemistry of Chinese materia medica, pharmacology, molecular and cellular biology and evidence-based medicine, is indispensable. Aligned with the essence of modern science, TCM embraces the seamless interplay between different fields, rendering it an appealing avenue for scientific inquiry. For this special issue, launched by an interdisciplinary group of eminent researchers, we invite original articles and reviews addressing the use of TCM for the treatment or prevention of COVID-19.


Topics of interest


This issue will publish original research papers, reviews, perspectives, and views & comments including but not limited to the following fields:


  • Pathobiology of COVIND-19 (SARS-CoV-2 invasion and replication)

  • Chemistry of Chinese materia medica

  • Activity and molecular mechanism of TCM and natural medicine

  • Immune regulation of TCM and natural products against viral infection

  • TCM and natural products for the treatment of long COVID-19

  • Emerging techniques in TCM and natural medicine

  • Evidence-based research for clinical evaluation


Paper Length


Research Article: up to ~8000 words;

Review: 6000–10000 words;

Perspectives: up to ~3000 words;

Views & Comments: up to ~2000 words, with less than five figures or tables and less than 15 references.

Groundbreaking research reveals the mechanism behind Buxu Tongyu granule in alleviating myocardial ischemia

Myocardial ischemia, a condition characterized by inadequate blood supply to the heart muscle, affects millions of people worldwide. While the focus of treatment has traditionally been on opening blocked arteries, recent research has shed light on the role of abnormalities in coronary microvessels and vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs) in myocardial ischemia. A new study investigating the pharmacological effects of Buxu Tongyu (BXTY) granule, a traditional Chinese medicine, has shown promising results in alleviating myocardial ischemia by activating the soluble guanylate cyclase (sGC)–3′,5′-cyclic guanosine monophosphate (cGMP)–protein kinase G (PKG) signaling pathway in VSMCs.
